Salyut 7: Repair in Orbit

The expedition to a dead station

A concluded exhibition on the 1985 rescue of the Salyut 7 station by Dzhanibekov and Savinykh.

In February 1985 Salyut 7 stopped answering commands. The crew of Soyuz T-13 docked manually with the tumbling station — a manoeuvre until then considered impossible — and worked for weeks inside the frozen hull by torchlight. The exhibition showed Savinykh’s logbook with the entry “The station is silent”, the crew’s woollen caps and the tools used to bring the power system back to life. The docking film ran in real time on a large screen. The material now forms the core of the Salyut 7 section in the permanent orbital stations display.
