Women in Cosmonautics

On 16 June 1963 the callsign Chaika sounded from orbit: Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space, flying solo for almost three days. Nineteen years later Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space. The exhibition will cover not only flight crews but also the women engineers of OKB-1, the calculators of the ballistics centre and the physicians of the cosmonaut corps. The section is built on interviews recorded by the museum in the 2020s. Exhibits include a Sokol KV-2 suit from a female flight kit, a flight overall and the working notebooks of the first female selection group of 1962.
