Meteor

Weather satellite

On display
Meteor carried television equipment for daytime imaging, infrared for night and an actinometric suite to measure the radiation balance. Data went both to the processing centre and directly to autonomous receiving stations, including ships and polar bases. A constellation of several satellites gave the country's forecasters their first regular global picture of cloud cover instead of scattered ground observations. The series worked for decades and its successors fly today. On display is an engineering mock-up with deployed solar arrays and the scanning instrument block.
