KM-1 ejection seat
Emergency escape system
On display
Ejection is a problem with several simultaneous threats: g-load at firing, dynamic pressure, tumbling and parachute deployment at high speed. The KM-1 addresses them in sequence: a cartridge and rocket motor accelerate the seat, stabilising booms damp the tumbling, and an automatic device opens the parachute only after deceleration.
The system worked from zero altitude at speeds above 130 km/h — true "zero-zero" capability arrived with the next generation, the K-36. Every save was recorded in statistics, which drove further refinement.
On display is a sectioned seat with the restraint system and parachute container.
