The D-30 was created at Pavel Solovyov's Perm bureau and became the first Soviet turbofan to enter wide civil service. A two-shaft layout with a supersonic first compressor stage and thrust reversal answered both the economy question and short-field landing.
The family spread widely: the D-30KP lifted the Il-76, and the afterburning D-30F6 pushed the MiG-31 to three times the speed of sound. The base version's service life was raised to tens of thousands of hours.
On display is an engine with the thrust reverser in the deployed position.
