Yak versus La: two roads to superiority

An archived exhibition on the Yakovlev and Lavochkin frontline fighters and their pilots.

The exhibition set two design philosophies against each other: the light, ruthlessly weight-trimmed, liquid-cooled Yak-3 and the wooden La-7 with its air-cooled radial. By 1944 both outclassed their opponents at low and medium altitude. The pilots’ stories — from Kozhedub, who flew the La-7, to the Normandie-Niemen regiment on the Yak-3 — were assembled from citation documents and memoirs. The Il-2 attack aircraft and Po-2 trainer completed the frontline context. After the closure both fighters returned to the permanent display of the war hall.
